WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kebbi State, Muhammad Ambursa, has expressed concerns that some local councils may struggle to pay salaries without state government assistance, despite welcoming the nationwide implementation of local government autonomy. Muhammad Ambursa, who also leads the Birnin Kebbi Local Government, shared his insights during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi. He noted that Kebbi State has not encountered major issues with local government autonomy, crediting Governor Idris for protecting the rights and privileges of local councils. While acknowledging the potential advantages of local government autonomy, Ambursa emphasized the financial difficulties that councils with limited resources might face. He stated, “Six local government councils in Kebbi may have challenges in paying salaries without state support. It’s essential to implement autonomy with awareness of these challenges.” He also mentioned that a recent meeting of local government chairmen in Katsina revealed similar issues affecting Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto states, where several councils are struggling with salary payments under the new autonomy framework. Ambursa lauded Governor Idris for his commitment to infrastructure enhancement, highlighting that funds have been allocated to all 21 local councils in Kebbi for the renovation of their secretariat buildings. “These secretariats have been upgraded to modern facilities, reflecting the governor’s dedication to effective local governance and development,” he concluded.
