The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all preparations for the by-elections set to take place across 16 constituencies in 12 states this Saturday, August 16, 2025, have been concluded.

The by-elections will include two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies across Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, and nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (2), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States.

Additionally, INEC announced that court-ordered re-run elections in Enugu South I State Constituency in Enugu State and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State will be conducted concurrently with the by-elections.

Naijaonpoint reports that in a press statement issued on Thursday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed that all non-sensitive materials for the election had been delivered to the states.

He added that election technology, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), had been configured for the elections.

“The recruitment and training of ad hoc staff, as well as security and logistics arrangements, have been concluded. The final consignment of sensitive materials will be delivered today as scheduled,” Olumekun stated.

Campaign Period Ends, Adherence to Legal Provisions Urged

INEC also reminded political parties and candidates that the campaign period would end at midnight on Thursday.

With less than 48 hours to the opening of polls, Olumekun appealed to all those involved in the by-elections, including political parties, candidates, voters, party agents, observers, and the media, to strictly adhere to the law and regulations to ensure a smooth process.

“We reiterate our appeal to all those involved in the bye-elections to adhere strictly to the provisions of the law, regulations, and guidelines. Doing so will ensure seamless processes,” Olumekun said.

Meanwhile, INEC has announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The online pre-registration portal will open on August 18, 2025, while physical registration will begin on August 25, 2025, at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide.

Olumekun explained that details about the registration centres, including telephone numbers for assistance, could be found on INEC’s website and other online platforms. Additionally, the active CVR Locator will go live on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

“The CVR exercise will allow citizens to register for the first time, transfer their registration within or across states, or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs),” Olumekun stated.

Olumekun also warned that multiple registrations are illegal and punishable by law.

“It needs to be emphasised that the CVR is only open to Nigerian citizens who are 18 years or older and who have not registered before, as double or multiple registration is a punishable offence under the law,” he said.
