INEC Receives Applications To Register Two Obidient Groups, 108 Others As Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has received applications from 110 political associations seeking registration as political parties.

Two of the applications were received from the Progressive Obedients Party (POP) and Obidient Peoples Party (OPP) widely believed to be linked to the political movement supporting former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

Yakubu had made the disclosure on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

INEC has also released the names of her 110 associations on its official social media accounts.

Speaking at the meeting, Yakubu said, “As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties.

“We are diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as our regulations and guidelines,” Yakubu said.

He explained that while the Commission has formally acknowledged most of the applications, six that were submitted recently are still pending acknowledgment.

“So far, we have acknowledged all applications received, except for six, which were submitted recently. These will be acknowledged before the end of the week,” he added.

Among the list of associations made public by INEC are the
OPP and POP groups many believe are being formed to formalize the political aspirations of the vibrant and youthful ‘Obidient’ movement, which rose to national prominence during the 2023 general elections in support of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate.

Yakubu urged all interested groups and the public to familiarize themselves with the Commission’s requirements for party registration, emphasizing transparency and adherence to due process.

“We encourage Nigerians, especially those interested in registering political parties, to consult the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022, which is available on our website,” he said.

INEC also announced that the full list of the 110 associations, including proposed party names, acronyms, national addresses, and the names of their respective Chairmen and Secretaries, will be uploaded to its official website and social media platforms in due course. Physical copies were distributed to stakeholders present at the meeting.
