Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State governor, has ordered the demolition of the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following a fire that claimed eight lives.
In a statement on X page on Friday, Sanwo-Olu described the building and its surroundings as unsafe.
Sanwo-Olu added that emergency responders were still working through debris at the rear of the building to ensure no one remained trapped.
“As of today, we have confirmed eight deaths. Five victims have been identified, while three remain unidentified. Thirteen people have been rescued so far,” the governor said.
“We have established an information center at the site. Anyone requiring assistance or information can speak with officers from LASEMA, NEMA, LASBCA, and the other responding agencies.
“The entire area remains unsafe. No business or unauthorized activity should be taking place there.
“The market is closed, and only first responders are permitted on the site. Emergency teams continue to work carefully through the rubble, particularly at the rear of the building, to ensure no one remains trapped.”
The Lagos State governor described the tragedy as a “reminder of the dangers posed by unsafe practices around markets, including improper generator use and shops built too close to electricity transformers.”
Following a structural review, Sanwo-Olu said the GNI building would be demolished using the safest methods, and some surrounding structures would also be removed to prevent further danger.
He also expressed sympathy for the families who lost loved ones and pledged to personally oversee the recovery process.
