Infinix Unveils CoolMax, an Active Cooling Concept For Smartphones

In the ever-evolving world of smartphones, the race for higher performance has led engineers to explore advanced cooling solutions. Infinix, a tech company, has been tinkering with a unique system named CoolMax, showcased in a prototype gaming phone that serves as a tantalizing glimpse into the future. Claiming a notable achievement, Infinix asserts that CoolMax can slash the chipset temperature by a substantial 10°C (50°F).

The heart of this cooling innovation lies within MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 chipset, boasting four Cortex-X4 cores instead of the customary one. With the synergistic power of CoolMax and an intelligent AI management platform, Infinix notched up a groundbreaking AnTuTu score of 2,215,639 with their experimental device.

So, what exactly is CoolMax?

It’s a fusion of a thermo-electric cooler (also known as a Peltier module) and a cooling fan. Diverging from external add-ons, CoolMax is seamlessly integrated into the phone, eliminating the inefficiency associated with the phone’s rear panel being a barrier between the chipset and the cooler. The only mediator between the chipset and the cooler is a layer of thermal paste.

Delving back into the specifics of the Dimensity 9300, the four Cortex-X4 cores exhibit a hierarchy in performance. One core races at an impressive 3.25GHz, while the remaining trio caps at 2.85Hz. Additionally, there are four A720 cores at 2.0GHz. An AI algorithm judiciously delegates tasks among the cores, prioritizing crucial functions on the faster cores and allocating less time-sensitive tasks to the power-efficient ones.

The gaming phone prototype also incorporates a Pixelworks visual processor, collaborating with the Immortalis-G720 GPU to generate extra frames. This dynamic system claims to achieve a refresh rate of 180Hz at FHD+ resolution and 144Hz at QHD+.

Infinix has exciting plans for a gaming phone slated for later in 2024, though details on how closely it aligns with this innovative concept are shrouded in mystery.

Before concluding, it’s worth highlighting a couple of other technologies showcased by Infinix at MWC. First up is AirCharge, a wireless charging system boasting a range of up to 20cm (around 8 inches), offering flexibility in placement. This contrasts with typical Qi chargers that demand proximity. The second noteworthy tech is the Infinix Extreme-Temp battery, designed to operate in frigid temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F).

This feature is not just for Arctic dwellers, as it addresses the common issue of lithium batteries losing efficiency in freezing temperatures. At -20°C (-4°C), the Extreme-Temp battery boasts an endurance increase ranging from 50% to an impressive 300% compared to standard lithium batteries.
