Nollywood actress Ini Edo has issued a press statement in response to the outrage over her new movie.
Kemi Filani reported that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had expressed deep concern over the title of Ini Edo’s new movie, A Very Detty Christmas’, labelling it offensive and disrespectful to the Christian Faith.
In a formal statement, the association argued that Christmas is a sacred season representing purity and redemption, and linking it to the word ‘dirty’ diminishes its spiritual significance for millions of believers. The association called on the producers and Ini Edo to reconsider the title, issue a public apology, and treat sacred seasons with the dignity they deserve.
Reacting to it via her Instagram page, Ini noted that art is meant to provoke thought, spark controversy, and reflect the complexities of the human experience.
The thespian noted that she is a devoted Christian and her faith is deeply personal to her, hence why she would never knowingly associate herself with any work that seeks to misrepresent, disrespect, or undermine her religion or the essence of Christmas.
Ini Edo explains that the title of the movie is metaphorical, reflecting the story being told and the realities explored. She added that she acknowledges the concerns raised by CAN and respects the important role faith plays in our society.
“My beautiful people, let’s not be distracted. The film is a masterpiece. Please come out to watch and support your girl”.
In 2023, Ini opened up about her deal with Netflix and how much it cost her. The movie producer stated that her deal with the streaming giant cost her tears and blood.
Luckily for her, her movie bagged 10 nominations at AMVCA. A joyous Ini Edo noted that she knew she was going to get a nomination, but didn’t know it would come in such grand style. She appreciated the entire cast and crew, as well as the audience who took the gospel of Shanty Town far and near.
In other news, Ini, via her Instagram page, shared photos of her appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival with Hollywood actors Eva Longoria and Vin Diesel. Gushing over them, Ini Edo described Eva as her favourite housewife as she expressed how amazing it was being in their company.
In a recent Instagram post, she shared a comic video of herself and IK Ogbonna, lamenting the difficulties of content creation. According to her, the things she has seen on her journey are untellable; however, she wasn’t complaining.
