Bandits have abducted 28 travellers in Zak community, Bashar district, Wase local government area of Plateau State.
Sapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview on Monday, revealing that the victims included men, women and children who were travelling from Zak village to Sabon Layi community.
According to him, the travellers were heading to attend a Maulud event on Sunday night when the attack occurred.
“The incident happened around 8pm when they were heading to Sabon Layi for the event. The gunmen ambushed the victims’ vehicle on the outskirts of the community and took away all the travellers, including the children, and abandoned the vehicle,” he told Daily Trust.
Sambo said two princes and a religious leader leading the journey were among those abducted.
He added that the abandoned vehicle, belonging to the Zak community leader, was discovered on Monday morning by other road users.
“It was on Monday morning that people travelling on the road saw the vehicle. So, in the course of investigation, the community discovered it was the vehicle that was carrying the travellers that was abandoned,” he added.
Another resident of Bashar town, Ibrahim Musa, said the whereabouts of the victims were still unknown.
Sambo said efforts to locate the abducted travellers had so far proved unsuccessful, adding that security agencies had been informed of the incident.
When contacted, Alabo Alfred, police spokesperson in the state, said the command was investigating the report.
