The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused state governors of misleading President Bola Tinubu about the true state of insecurity in the country.
The party called on the president to step out of the Presidential Villa and directly engage with Nigerians to understand their daily security challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, ADC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said insecurity remains a major issue nationwide despite claims of progress by the Federal Government.
“I actually think President Tinubu needs to leave the Villa and go on the streets and talk to people. He should stop listening to this kind of narrative [that insecurity has been degraded] and stop listening to state governors who are just saying what they think they need to say to endear themselves to power rather than tell him the true feelings of the people,” Abdullahi stated.
Abdullahi was reacting to comments by presidential spokesman, Daniel Bwala, who insisted that security had significantly improved under President Tinubu.
Bwala, also a guest on the programme, cited reductions in violent incidents in Benue and Plateau states and fewer attacks linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and unknown gunmen compared to 2022 and 2023.
“Insecurity has been degraded to a large extent. What we are seeing in Nigeria is criminal tendencies that have no core relationship with whether somebody is governing well or not, because it exists in every part of this world,” Bwala said.
The ADC spokesman faulted this narrative, saying it does not reflect the reality faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“I feel sorry for President Tinubu because if this is the kind of narrative that he gets to hear all the time, then it is natural and obvious that he lives in a bubble,” Abdullahi said.
He added that several parts of the country remain under siege by criminals, insisting that the administration must acknowledge the scale of insecurity to effectively address it.
