Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has demanded the resignation of President Bola Tinubu following the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State.
In a post on 𝕏 on Wednesday, Falz referenced a 2014 tweet in which Tinubu, then an opposition leader, urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign for allegedly failing to secure the country.
Quoting Tinubu’s own words from November 2014, Falz wrote, “You have consistently shown your unwillingness to protect the lives and property of our people despite pretending to care in the past. RESIGN NOW!”
The 2014 tweet was issued seven months after Boko Haram abducted schoolgirls in Chibok, with Tinubu repeatedly insisting at the time that Jonathan lacked the will and capacity to protect Nigerians.
Tinubu had criticised the Jonathan administration in Ilorin earlier that year, accusing it of deceiving Nigerians about the true scale of insecurity.
He said, “I saw the sea of displaced persons caused by the Boko Haram insurgents and the lies coming from Jonathan’s administration. They have exhibited failure, lack of capacity, vision, creativity; the lie of yesterday is what they repeat today… They are lying to you.
“If you control the armed forces and you are the Commander-in-Chief… why should any part of this country be under occupation? In any civilized country, Jonathan should resign. But if he will not resign, he should wait for our broom, we will sweep them.”
Those remarks became part of the core message of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general election, in which Muhammadu Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan.
Falz’s call comes as the nation reels from the attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State. Gunmen killed a vice principal and abducted 25 female students in an early-morning raid.
