Apple could release a slimmer iPhone 17 variant, apart from the regular models. According to the reports, the company could call it the iPhone 17 Air. Apple could also launch a new iPhone SE model as well. We already know some key details about the iPhone 17 Air variant. A new report now suggests the iPhone 17 Air will be 2mm thinner than the current models.

The iPhone 17 Air could be the slimmest iPhone to date

According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the iPhone 17 Air will be 2mm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro. The latter is 8.25mm thick, which suggests that the Air model could measure around 6.25mm around the waist. The iPhone 17 Air may be 1.55mm slimmer than the current iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus variants.

Notably, the source suggests that a new 5G modem will allow the iPhone 17 Air to be 2mm thinner than the current models. The next-gen iPhone SE model will also feature the same new 5G modem.

For now, the modem won’t be used in Apple’s higher-end products. It’s set to come to a new mid-tier iPhone later next year, code-named D23, that features a far thinner design than current models. The chip will also start rolling out as early as 2025 in Apple’s lower-end iPads”, said Gurman in a blog post.

The engineers will tightly integrate the 5G modem and internals.

Furthermore, the analyst claims the engineers will tightly integrate the 5G modem and internal components. Despite a slimmer design, the iPhone 17 Air will still have room for the battery, display, and camera system. Notably, the company could also use the same 5G modem on foldable devices. The company is reportedly exploring foldable products for a while.

Lastly, Gurman suggests the new 5G modem will not be as powerful as the one in the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the consumers might not notice a difference in day-to-day use.
