After failing to find a job post-secondary school, Irene sought lifts from truck drivers. One driver promised employment but tried to force her into sex. She escaped and later accepted a ride from another driver who demanded sex in exchange for the fare.
When she refused, he threw her out into the dark. Left stranded, Irene was attacked by a hyena, severely injuring her arm, eye, and cheek. Police arrived just in time to scare the animal away and rushed her to the hospital.
Now using one eye and hand, Irene regrets her refusal, believing her life might have been different.
