Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third movie in the heist franchise, is finally coming out this Friday (November 14), nine years after the last installment. This outing will see the magic act known as The Four Horsemen reunite after an apparent falling out, recruiting a new generation of magicians, and facing off with a crime syndicate, stealing a priceless diamond.
Returning franchise stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Morgan Freeman lead Now You See Me 3‘s cast, joined by newcomers Ariana Greenblatt, Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith, and Rosamund Pike. Additionally, Isla Fisher, one of the stars of the original movie, is reprising her role as Henley after sitting out the second installment because of her pregnancy at the time.
In an interview with Ash Crossan for ScreenRant‘s cover story, Fisher revealed how Henley’s previous absence and subsequent return will be explained in the new story. In Now You See Me 2, it is said that Henley grew tired of waiting for answers from the mysterious organization called The Eye and thus left the group; she is replaced by Lizzy Caplan’s Lula May in this installment.
But now Henley has returned, and Fisher shared that the in-world justification is that Henley was focusing on her personal life, but she agreed to help with this mission because of the cause of defeating Pike’s character, who is causing real harm in the world. Check Fisher’s full comments below:
As for Henley, I think she’s been with her kid. But truly, she’s not coming back because of her ego or because she wants to resolve things with Danny Atlas, who sidelined her as an assistant. I think it’s much more about the fact that she feels passionately about this disgusting person and the human trafficking and money laundering, and she wants to be involved in activism. This is a way to use her skillset and align with her friends and new horsemen to right the wrongs.
Henley is portrayed as having a difficult relationship with Atlas, an old flame, in the first movie, while he seems to be upset by her leaving The Four Horsemen. Their fading tension is replaced by a more genuine romance between Jack (Franco) and Lula in Now You See Me 2; however, Caplan has seemingly been dropped by the Now You See Me franchise.
If Now You See Me 3 wants to have a romantic subplot, it will probably be between a pair of the younger characters. On the other hand, this threequel seems to be focusing more than ever on the purported mission of The Eye, which is to use sleight to steal from a corrupt upper class to redistribute wealth to those who need it. This cause is what brings Henley out of retirement.
The previous movies position the magicians’ Robin Hood-style feats as more of a byproduct of their magic careers, whereas Now You See Me: Now You Don’t has them combating the crime syndicate as the primary mission. Now, in addition to getting back one of the franchise’s best original stars, Henley’s return could serve to underscore this theme.
