A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has revealed that the Board of Trustees (BoT) played a crucial role in diffusing a potentially violent confrontation between two claimants to the party’s National Secretary position at its headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Monday.

Naijaonpoint reports that despite a court affirming Sunday Ude-Okoye as the legitimate PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who had previously held the position, resumed work at the party headquarters, citing a pending appeal and stay of execution.

The crisis between the duo began after Ude-Okoye was nominated as the National Secretary after Anyanwu emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for Imo State.

However, Anyanwu lost the election and decided to reclaim his position. His return to the secretariat threatened to escalate tensions, as both he and Ude-Okoye were reportedly determined to assert their authority over the position.

Amid the unfolding drama, security forces, including police and Department of State Security personnel, were deployed to the PDP headquarters to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Speaking to Punch, an anonymous member of the PDP NWC stated that the BoT, along with the PDP Governors Forum and other senior party leaders, intervened to diffuse the situation.

According to the source, “What the PDP survived could have been catastrophic. Some individuals wanted the crisis to escalate into physical confrontations, giving the police a reason to shut down the secretariat. This would have created a vacuum and bought time for ulterior motives.

“Fortunately, the BoT and Governors Forum intervened. They advised Anyanwu to respect the Enugu Court judgment and urged Ude-Okoye to stay away from Wadata Plaza to avoid a clash. This swift action by the party leadership prevented what could have been a major embarrassment.”
