Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, reportedly asked his supporters to vote for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bolarinwa Oluwole, in the August 16 by-election in Ogun State.

Naijaonpoint reports that a by-election in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency of Ogun was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the vacant seat left by the death of Adewunmi Onanuga in January.

An All Progressives Congress (APC) insider, who spoke with The Cable, said Daniel, a few days before the poll, instructed his loyalists via WhatsApp messages to mobilise everyone to back Oluwole over the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Adesola Elegbeji.

The APC chieftain said Daniel, who was out of the country at the time, instructed his allies to back the PDP just as they had done in the previous election, promising to give them full support upon his return.

According to the source, the WhatsApp message, which Daniel later deleted and blamed on AI, was the reason APC leaders confronted him.

Gbenga Daniel’s message read, “Please mobilise all our people to vote the same way as before. I will support, as always, PDP.”

According to insiders, APC leaders in Ogun who got wind of Daniel’s instruction to his supporters ahead of the by-election were alarmed, describing it as a clear case of his “consistent betrayal” of the party.

Sources said that apart from his own election, Daniel quietly backed the PDP during the 2023 governorship poll, working against the APC despite being one of its most prominent figures in Ogun.
