James Gunn revealed a major update about his involvement with Constantine 2. The first Constantine film was released in 2005 and starred Keanu Reeves as the titular character. Other cast members included Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Tilda Swinton.
The Constantine sequel has been in development purgatory for several years, but there have finally been positive updates in recent months, including from Reeves himself, who revealed in early October that a new draft of the script was finished, and the team planned to submit it to the studio.
During an interview with BobaTalks, Gunn explained that he’s discussed Constantine 2 with Reeves “on and off.” While he thinks the actor and the whole team are very talented, the co-chair of DC Studios admitted that he hasn’t read a script just yet, despite Reeves’ major update a few weeks ago. I’ve discussed it on and off. I’ve discussed it with Keanu. I think that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented. But I have not read any script yet.
After Gunn took charge of DC Studios to reboot the franchise, it was revealed that Constantine 2 would not be in the main DC Universe continuity with Superman and Peacemaker; instead, it would be labeled as a DC Elseworlds project alongside Joker and The Batman.
Before Reeves and Gunn’s recent updates on the film, the process had been very slow-moving, including long stretches without any developments from the team. Considering both Reeves and Gunn have revealed information about the script within the same month, it appears that pre-production is truly underway now.
An early draft of the script was finished in fall 2024, but development on the story continued into 2025, with Reeves a part of that process alongside director Francis Lawrence, the producers, and writers. The story was approved by DC Studios in early 2025, which led to a new script being written.
After Reeves’ recent comments, it’s unknown if the script has actually been officially submitted to DC Studios. Even if it has been turned in, Gunn has not read it yet, according to his own update.
There’s a chance that Gunn and other DC executives will want to refine the story and script even more over the coming months, but once the script is approved, then the ball can really get rolling on other major pre-production elements like casting, set design and location scouting.
Constantine has been a fan-favorite film among comic fans ever since its release in 2005. Almost a decade later, NBC premiered a TV show adaptation of Constantine starring Matt Ryan, whose version of the character appeared in the Arrowverse after his show was canceled.
While the TV show didn’t last, the desire among fans for a return of Reeves’ iteration never wavered. Even though Gunn hasn’t read the script yet, the development process for Constantine 2 is gradually moving forward, and fans may receive more exciting updates in the months to come.
