Sony is returning to The Social Network through The Social Reckoning more than a decade after the first film was released to the world. As Aaron Sorkin is telling one of the most crucial events in the history of Facebook, the lead star of the 2010 film has now broken his silence on why he is not coming back.
During his appearance on TODAY, Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, finally tackled the question of why he won’t reprise the famous CEO in the sequel. The 42-year-old star opened with, “Listen, for reasons that have nothing to do with how amazing that movie will be, really, truthfully.”
Eisenberg continued by adding, “But when you play a character, you feel, at some point, you’ve grown into something else.” However, when asked if he felt that he had outgrown the part, he shared, “Yeah, something.”
While not taking part in it, Eisenberg elaborated by sharing his excitement for the second installment “It’s a really wonderful movie. I’m friends with Aaron Sorkin who wrote and is directing this movie.” He concluded by saying, “All of the reasons that I am not in it are completely unrelated to how brilliant it will be.”
As Eisenberg isn’t part of The Social Reckoning cast, Jeremy Strong was officially tapped to play Mark Zuckerberg in the 2026 entry on September 26, 2025. Audience members should also not expect to see Andrew Garfield return, as the British actor debunked it in an interview with IndieWire on September 27, 2025.
Garfield explained, “No, no. Eduardo [Saverin] is in Singapore having a good time.” The Social Reckoning story focuses on Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, as the Facebook engineer who became a whistleblower who turns to the press to expose the secrets of the social media platform.
Jeremy Allen White is playing Wall Street Journal reporter, Jeff Horowitz, who, together with Haugen, brought the so-called “Facebook Files” to the surface in 2021. Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku have also signed on for the film in mystery roles.
According to Vancouver is Awesome, principal photography began in Vancouver, Canada, on October 22, 2025, with “Goliath” as the working title. The Social Rekoning is slated to hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
