Jigawa: 209 dead, 99 injured, properties worth millions lost from tanker explosion— Panel

The panel chaired by Hafizu Inuwa, presented its findings to Governor Umar Namadi today in Dutse.

The investigation revealed that 38 of the injured individuals remain hospitalized, while 61 have been discharged. The incident also impacted 167 families, causing property damage valued in the millions of Naira.

Inuwa stated, “It was further discovered that the inferno resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira.”

The report identified multiple contributing factors to the explosion, including damaged speed bumps and potholes near the accident site, as well as reckless behaviors such as night driving and excessive speeding.

Inuwa explained that the fire may have been sparked by various factors, including the friction between metallic containers and hard surfaces or other containers, as victims attempted to scoop up the spilled fuel.

The committee recommended implementing stricter safety protocols for petroleum transporters and articulated vehicles, along with regular road inspections.

Additionally, they suggested establishing trauma and burn units in healthcare facilities, upgrading emergency response centers, and creating a road traffic control agency to monitor and enforce road safety measures.

Inuwa also emphasized the need for the government to provide social protection for older and vulnerable victims and their families, proposing enrollment into the Danmodi Care Programme.

Governor Namadi commended the panel for its thorough investigation and expressed his administration’s commitment to enacting the recommendations to prevent future tragedies.

“We owe it to the victims and the people of Jigawa State to ensure that such a disaster does not happen again. My administration will prioritize the welfare of the affected families and enforce stricter safety measures on our roads,” Governor Namadi assured.

He also commended the resilience of the Majiya community and reaffirmed his government’s dedication to their recovery and support.

This tragic explosion, one of the deadliest in recent history, underscores the urgent need for improved road safety and emergency response systems in Jigawa State and beyond.
