WATCH THE VIDEO HERE A devastating bus fire in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State has claimed the lives of four people, including three children. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday when a Hummer bus carrying 44 passengers caught fire near Government Girls Unity Secondary School. According to the Jigawa State Police Command, the fire broke out after a mattress tied to the back of the bus came into contact with the exhaust pipe, triggering the blaze. Police spokesperson SP Lawan Shiisu confirmed the details, stating, “The fire ignited when the mattress caught fire from the vehicle’s exhaust. Sadly, four victims—a 40-year-old woman and three children aged five, three, and ten—were burned beyond recognition.” Ten other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to Gwaram Cottage Hospital for treatment. The remaining passengers were safely evacuated, while the deceased were handed over to their families for burial in line with Islamic rites. A survivor, Mallam Musa Adamu, described the terrifying moment. “The fire spread so quickly that there was little time to escape. People were screaming for help, but within minutes, the flames consumed the bus,” he recalled. In response, the Jigawa State Police Command has urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to prioritize safety. “Drivers must avoid overloading, excessive speeding, and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before embarking on journeys,” SP Shiisu warned. Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Government has extended its condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
