John Boyega has three conditions for returning to the Star Wars franchise. Boyega played Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy movies. He has spoken about the racism he experienced from certain corners of the fandom, along with creative choices for his character that he disagreed with, particularly in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
With Rey (Daisy Ridley) returning in an upcoming Star Wars movie set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, there has been speculation about whether Boyega could reprise the role of Finn as well. More recently, news of the scrapped Hunt for Ben Solo movie has led to fan campaigns to revive the project, and more speculation about the future of sequel trilogy-era characters.
At Liverpool Comic Con (via Collider), Boyega now reveals that he would be open to a Star Wars return under three conditions. The first is that it would have to be a movie, as the bromance between Finn and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) “should only be on the big screen.” The second is that Poe and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) must be in it, and the third is that there must be “a great script.” Check out Boyega’s comments below:
Me and Oscar are very stubborn, and we believe the bromance should only be on the big screen.
It has to be a movie and obviously a great script. And I already spoke to Joonas today and said, “Joonas, you must join Poe and Finn on their adventure.” So if I get those combinations, who knows.
As for whether Boyega is in Rey’s “New Jedi Order” movie, he makes it clear that he doesn’t know anything about the project, but as “the Tom Holland of Star Wars”, he will be the first to provide an update. Holland, who plays Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is infamous for accidentally revealing spoilers early.
Trust me, I’m like the Tom Holland of Star Wars. Once I know something I’ll let you know.
Both Boyega and Isaac have previously criticized how Finn and Poe’s relationship was handled. Boyega seems to believe that a new story with Finn and Poe could fix that, but only as a movie, and not as a Star Wars show on Disney+. With Lucasfilm now prioritizing movies over live-action shows, this condition has a better chance of being met than it would have been a few years ago.
It’s unconfirmed when Chewbacca will appear next in live-action Star Wars, but Boyega would like for Finn and Poe to reunite with the beloved Wookiee. Chewbacca spends ample time with Finn and Poe at various points in the sequel trilogy, and a new movie can continue building on his friendships with them.
As for Finn being in the “New Jedi Order” movie, it is possible that he is concealing his involvement with the project, although the film has already changed writers multiple times, so there is just as good of a chance that he is being truthful about not knowing anything yet. Between his close friendship with Rey and being confirmed to be Force-sensitive in The Rise of Skywalker, “New Jedi Order” is a logical place for Finn to return.
Since Shawn Levy’s Starfighter set in the years after The Rise of Skywalker, Finn could technically return there as well, even though it has been described as a more standalone story despite its placement in the Star Wars canon timeline. The main cast has already been announced, so if Finn were to appear, it would likely be as a cameo or in a smaller supporting role.
While Finn has yet to return to live-action storytelling, the character has appeared in several Star Wars stories since The Rise of Skywalker‘s release in 2019. Omar Benson Miller voiced Finn in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special and LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation. Finn is also a main character in The Last Order novel by Kwame Mbalia, which was published on October 21, 2025.
