John Williams & Steven Spielberg Reunite for Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie

Legendary composer John Williams is reuniting with Steven Spielberg for the director’s next movie. The upcoming Universal Pictures film is slated for a June 12, 2026 theatrical release, but little is known about the project other than it being a science-fiction story that reporetedly involves UFOs.

During the “John Williams — A Composer’s Life: A Night of Stories and Music” event at the Julliard School, university president Damian Woetzel confirmed that Williams is in Los Angeles working with Spielberg on his next movie. The news was first reported by journalist Doug Adams.

This is the 30th Steven Spielberg movie that Williams has scored. They have collaborated on many of Spielberg’s past science-fiction films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), and War of the Worlds (2005).

The last movie that the 93-year-old composer scored before Spielberg’s newest movie was Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), the franchise’s first installment that was not directed by Spielberg, although he was still an executive producer on the project. Williams also composed the music for Spielberg’s last film, The Fabelmans (2022).

In 2022, Williams teased that he would retire after Dial of Destiny, but he later clarified in 2023 that he did not want to shut down the door on all future opportunities and would return if a movie interested him: “I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context, then I withdraw it.”

Beyond their many collaborations together, John Williams and Steven Spielberg’s friendship spans many years, making it unsurprising that it is a Spielberg project marking the composer’s return to scoring an entire movie.

Additionally, Williams is not the only former collaborator joining Spielberg for the 2026 project. While Spielberg developed the story, David Koepp wrote the script, reuniting with the director after they previously worked together on Jurassic Park, The Lost World, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

The cast of the new movie features Emily Blunt, Wyatt Russell, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Noah Robbins. Koepp previously shared that filming has wrapped.

Working with John Williams and David Koepp again, along with focusing on the science-fiction genre, signals a return to classic Steven Spielberg movies. Even without a title or any plot details, it is already one of the most anticipated movies coming to theaters in 2026 and has the potential to be a massive summer blockbuster.
