Former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has urged Nigerian leaders to place citizens’ welfare at the centre of governance and adopt people-centred leadership in 2026.

Jonathan made the call in his New Year message, released through his Media Assistant, Wealth Dickson Ominabo.

The former president stressed that unity, shared responsibility and integrity are crucial to securing Nigeria’s future, particularly in the face of economic difficulties and lingering insecurity.

Reflecting on the outgoing year, Jonathan acknowledged the hardships endured by many Nigerians, noting that economic pressures and persistent security challenges tested the nation’s resilience.

“The period behind us has not been without its trials — challenges that have tested our resilience and, for many families, brought hardship and loss,” he said.

Despite the difficulties, he praised Nigerians for their courage, solidarity and perseverance, describing their resilience as one of the country’s greatest assets.

Looking ahead, Jonathan called on both citizens and leaders to renew their commitment to national ideals, emphasising that true patriotism must be matched with service, humility and integrity.

“Leadership at all levels must be anchored in service, guided by humility and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people,” he stated.

He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling year, while praying for sustained progress towards unity, justice and shared prosperity.
