The city of Jos, Plateau State, was thrown into a festive mood on Saturday as residents trooped out en masse for the funeral of Mama Lydia Yilwatda Goshwe, mother of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda.
The event, held at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) Headquarters, quickly transformed into a political jamboree, as excitement grew over the expected arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was billed to attend the service.
The atmosphere in Jos was electric, with major roads witnessing heavy traffic due to processions and rallies by party supporters.
Ahead of the visit, the Plateau State Government had announced traffic diversions in Jos and Bukuru to ensure the smooth movement of the presidential convoy.
In a statement issued on Friday, Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, explained that the diversion was necessary to maintain order during the President’s visit.
Interestingly, party lines appeared to blur, as supporters of both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) celebrated side by side. Many were seen carrying banners, wearing party-branded T-shirts, and waving flags in solidarity.
Women and youth groups also joined the fanfare, while members of the Boys’ Brigade added colour to the scene with a coordinated street parade and marching band performance.
At the church premises, security was tight, with attendees required to present special entry passes distributed earlier. Some pastors without passes were reportedly turned back, leading to minor scuffles with security personnel.
Meanwhile, a large crowd gathered at the Jos International Airport, Heipang, to welcome President Tinubu, who was expected to arrive from Lagos for the ceremony.
