WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Drake faced a major ‘W’ in his defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group after a judge shot down UMG’s request to delay the discovery process. Drake has now been permitted to request access to documents, including Lamar’s contracts with the label. “Now it’s time to see what UMG was so desperately trying to hide,” said Drake’s lead attorney, Michael Gottlieb, in a statement. According to the record label, Drake asked for all the contracts between UMG and Lamar, as well as “the executive compensation structure and annual incentive plans for Interscope Chief Executive Officer John Janick for the past five years.” The label did not want to give up these documents as they claimed they are “confidential, proprietary, and highly commercially sensitive,” and said that Drake’s request would “require costly collection and review of large swaths of hard-copy and electronic data sets, contracts and agreements, and communications.” Drake accused the label of promoting Kendick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” which accused him of being a “pedophile” and that they used payola to further push the agenda. UMG says Drake “lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated.” “Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds.”
