Judiciary Losing Public Trust — PDP Spokesman Blasts APC Over Governance Claims

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over growing public disillusionment with Nigeria’s judiciary, citing increasing politicisation, lack of accountability, and disconnection from citizens’ realities.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ini Ememobong, issued the warning while reacting to recent remarks by Sunday Dare, Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications and Orientation, who had defended the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over criticisms of its governance record.

“People no longer trust the judiciary. There is the politicisation of the judiciary and the judicialisation of politics. There is an absence of consequences. These are the realities that affect democratic consolidation,” Ememobong said.

Dare had earlier argued that the APC was not afraid of scrutiny, claiming that Nigeria’s challenges predate the current administration and that reforms take time to mature. He also cited progress in democratic institutions under the APC government.

However, Ememobong countered that statistics and economic indicators mean little if they don’t translate into real impact on citizens’ lives.

“When you speak about GDP, please tie it to the fact that you meet everyday Nigerians and when you interact with them, do they reflect the economy that you speak about?” he queried.

The PDP spokesman accused the ruling party of dodging responsibility, insisting that the absence of consequences for public officials continues to weaken democratic institutions.

“These are not just numbers. They are lives, and the more we ignore the disconnect between policy and people, the harder it becomes to build trust in governance,” he added.
