WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Jussie Smollett has reached a settlement with the city of Chicago six years after the city sued him for an alleged hate crime hoax. The former Empire star was convicted in 2021 on five counts of disorderly conduct after falsely reporting to Chicago police that he was the victim of a hate-fueled street attack involving two masked men who poured bleach on him and shouted racist and homophobic slurs. It was later revealed that Smollett had allegedly paid two Nigerian brothers $3,500 to stage the incident. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail in 2022 but was released after just six days following an appeal filed by his attorney. Chicago and the actor told the court they had settled, “but they need more time to finalize documentation.” The details of the agreement were not released to the public. The next hearing in this matter has been scheduled for May 29. The actor has always maintained his innocence. “That was a pretty dark day because that’s when everything clicked to me of what was happening,” Smollett told People at the time. “A lot of things tested my strength, a lot of things tested my mental, but the one thing I never lost—I never started thinking that I am somebody that I’m not.”
