The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a rising broadcast journalist with Arise News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.
Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues and friends, was 29 years old.
Born on December 26, 1995, she had quickly carved a niche for herself as a news anchor, reporter, and producer, admired for her professionalism, eloquence, and passion for storytelling.
Before launching her career in broadcasting, Maduagwu trained as a lawyer, a background that brought intellectual depth and analytical rigour to her journalism.
In a statement on Monday, the management of Arise News confirmed her death, describing her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” the statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi for management read.
“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.
Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
Her colleagues at Arise News have expressed deep grief, recalling her warmth, infectious energy, and tireless dedication to the newsroom.
Tributes have also poured in on social media from viewers, fellow journalists, and members of the legal community who knew her.
Security sources confirmed that the Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the robbery, which has reignited concerns over rising insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
As family, friends, and colleagues struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss, Arise News has pledged to honour her memory by upholding the values she stood for in journalism.
Maduagwu is survived by her parents, siblings, and extended family. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
