JUST IN: Gov Makinde hands over power to deputy, gives reason

Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that his deputy, Bayo Lawal, will assume his duties from Friday, August 29, 2025, as he proceeds on a one-month leave.

The governor’s notification was contained in a letter to the House of Assembly, which was read by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin during Tuesday’s plenary.

In the letter, Makinde formally requested approval for his leave and handed over responsibilities to Lawal, who will serve as Acting Governor throughout the vacation period.

According to Ogundoyin, the governor’s action is in line with Section 190(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires a state governor to notify the House in writing before proceeding on leave.

I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, September 29 2025,” the letter read in part.

Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin reaffirmed the House’s commitment to upholding constitutional order and ensuring seamless governance in the state.

With Governor Makinde’s formal notification and the Assembly’s endorsement, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal will assume full responsibilities of the office as Acting Governor from August 29 until Makinde’s return on September 29.
