Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has strongly criticised the recent assaults on Christian communities in Nigeria.
The condemnation followed yet another disturbing incident involving the abduction of schoolgirls and teachers in the country.
Meloni said the attacks were unacceptable. She stressed that the safety of Christians in Nigeria must be treated as a priority.
In her words, “We firmly condemn the renewed violence that occurred today against Christian communities in Nigeria.”
She described religious freedom as non-negotiable. “Religious freedom is an inviolable right,” the Italian leader added.
The Prime Minister urged Nigerian authorities to take tougher steps to secure Christian and other religious groups across the nation.
She also called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the latest violence.
“We call on the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian and all religious communities and to prosecute those responsible for these brutal attacks,” she said.
Meloni noted that Italy stands with the victims and communities currently living in fear due to their faith.
Her message, also shared on Facebook, reaffirmed Italy’s solidarity with Nigerians affected by religious-based violence.
The renewed attacks come at a time when several communities across Northern Nigeria continue to face repeated kidnappings and killings linked to armed groups.
