The Lagos State Government has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the work-free day for all public servants across the state, according to a circular issued by the Head of Service, Huiel Bode Agoro, with reference number CIR/HOS/’25/Vol.I/064.

The circular, addressed to top government officials, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous culture, traditions, and heritage while strengthening traditional institutions.

“In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional Institutions in the State, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as Work-Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day,” the circular read.

Work will resume on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., with Accounting Officers directed to circulate the notice across all ministries, departments, and agencies.

Isese Day, marked annually by adherents of traditional religion, honours the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. In recent years, Lagos State has institutionalised the celebration to recognise the role of traditional beliefs in its social and cultural identity.
