Local government elections have commenced across Rivers State.
In Bori, Khana Local Government Area, officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) are awaiting the arrival of sensitive materials for onward distribution to polling units.
The exercise follows Friday’s distribution of election materials at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt, carried out under tight security and monitored by party agents. Ad-hoc staff and security operatives have since been deployed to various local government areas.
Although some sensitive materials were distributed yesterday, there is still activities at the commission’s headquarters as distribution is still being done.
The polls are being conducted under the supervision of RSIEC Sole Administrator, Ibas, as Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains suspended.
Heavy security presence was on Friday reported within and around the commission’s premises, with access restricted to accredited personnel.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command earlier ordered a restriction of movement across the state between 12 a.m. and 6 p.m. to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
