Godiya Akwashiki, the senator representing Nasarawa North, has died in India after a prolonged illness.

The senator elected under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, was aged 52.

NAN quoted a family source as saying that the lawmaker passed away on December 31, 2025, at a hospital where he had been receiving medical care.

The source described his death as a devastating loss to the district and the state.

He said the late lawmaker’s commitment to development, infrastructure delivery and human empowerment distinguished him throughout his political career.

“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” he said.

“His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency, as he was the only senator that re-contested and won a second term in the zone.”

Before his election into the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Akwashiki had earlier served as majority leader and later deputy speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

Akwashiki was born on 3 August 1973 in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
