Nigeria’s national power grid has suffered its first collapse of the year on Friday, plunging electricity generation nationwide to zero.
According to the data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), power generation fell to zero megawatts.
The system operator’s records indicated that load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies dropped to zero megawatts by 1pm.
The affected distribution companies include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola.
The latest outage follows a series of grid collapses recorded across 2025, with the most recent incident occurring on December 29.
The repeated system failures have persisted despite ongoing upgrades aimed at improving grid capacity and stability.
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) had earlier said it restored an additional 450 megawatts to the grid after completing scheduled maintenance at the Geregu National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plant.
On November 9, 2025, NISO said it collaborated with the West African Power Pool Information and Coordination Centre (WAPP-ICC) to conduct a synchronisation test between Nigeria’s grid and the broader West African power network.
