The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) says it will proceed with its scheduled protest over insecurity despite a late-night meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.
Tinubu met the labour leadership in Abuja in a last-minute effort to persuade the union to suspend the nationwide action.
Speaking to journalists at the Labour House in Abuja on Wednesday, Ajaero said the protest would go ahead as planned.
Ajaero had earlier declined to give a definitive answer to whether the protest would go ahead immediately meeting with the president.
“If I’m insisting (on proceeding with the strike), I’m not insisting. I will communicate to you. It is not an organisation that one person rules,”Ajaero said.
“Let’s go back now. You have a meeting of labour and the governor’s forum. We’ll go back to the drawing board and digest all that Mr President said to us, and move forward from there.
“We came for consultation with the president, and we are finished. So, we have to go back to our meeting and then continue tomorrow. By tomorrow, we will get the outcome.”
Tuesday’s talks were held as organised labour weighed internal deliberations on a possible nationwide strike over rising living costs and salary concerns.
In recent days, the presidency and the Governors’ Forum have intensified outreach to labour leaders, pressing for negotiations rather than street protests and industrial action.
