Former Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has passed away.
Rufai died on Thursday after a prolonged illness.
He was 61 years old.
Fondly known as Dodomayana, Rufai was widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced.
His football career spanned two decades, during which he played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
Rufai also proudly represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups and participated in two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
His passing coincides with another tragic loss in the football world—Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died earlier in the day in a car crash in Spain, alongside his brother.
Born in Lagos, Rufai began his football journey in Nigeria, featuring for Stationery Stores F.C. and Femo Scorpions. In 1986, he made a move to Benin Republic, where he joined AS Dragons FC de l’Ouémé.
