JUST IN: Police officer killed in a fresh attack by hoodlums in Bayelsa

Hoodlums in the Amarata area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State have killed a police officer simply identified as Obot Godwin.

Politics Nigeria gathered that Godwin was killed when he went to buy some medicine in the area at about 6 am on Tuesday.

Residents of Amarata said the hoodlums had robbed the police officer of his phone.

The hoodlums further hit him on the head while he was pleading with them to return his phone. He died on the spot, residents of the area said.

The police command in the state has since deployed officers around the area leading to OMPADEC Street and its environs.

Arrests have also been made following the incident.

Punch reports that residents have also accused the police of indiscriminate arrest, sporadic gunshots and teargassing of women and children in response to the killing of their colleague.

Some of the residents of the area have also fled their homes for fear of arrest by the police.

“Windows were smashed during the raid, and the community has been left in fear of further violence.”

“I am tired. Every time, we continue to run. This morning we started running again. They just killed somebody.

“Even the chief has been arrested. They have threatened to return in the evening and arrest people. We don’t know what to do,” a resident who pleaded anonymity said.

Concerned over the growing fear, another resident said, “Two people were forcefully taken away from my mini estate, a businessman whose wife works in the bank and another young man who works with Bayelsa Park.

“Houses were broken into by police and men and women were taken into custody by force,” he added.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the police in Bayelsa, Musa Mohammed said the incident is a serious matter.

Mohammed stated, “Yes, it is a serious matter. The area is calm. Police teams are on the ground and the investigation is ongoing.”
