Just In: Rishi Sunak Resigns As UK Prime Minister After Election Defeat

Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party, acknowledging the public’s anger and disappointment following Labour’s overwhelming victory in the general election.

Speaking from the steps of 10 Downing Street, Mr. Sunak said he would remain in his role until the Tory leadership race begins.

“I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all,” he stated. “But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgement that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss.”

Mr. Sunak expressed his honor in serving as Prime Minister, calling the UK “the best country in the world.” However, the Conservative Party faced a historic defeat, losing more seats than in any previous election, with many regions across the country shifting to Labour.

After securing his own seat in Richmond, North Yorkshire, Mr. Sunak admitted the results were “sobering” and conceded defeat.

“The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” he said. “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight; there is much to learn, and I take responsibility for the loss.”

Following his resignation speech, Mr. Sunak and his wife Akshata traveled to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to the King.

The King’s spokesman later confirmed that His Majesty had graciously accepted the resignation.

Mr. Sunak acknowledged the difficulty of the day, reflecting on the loss of many Tory colleagues from the House of Commons.

“It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much to their communities and our country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons. I thank them for their hard work and their service,” he said.

Emphasizing the need for the Conservative Party to rebuild, Sunak stressed the importance of taking up their role in opposition professionally and effectively.

He also extended his best wishes to Sir Keir Starmer and his family, recognizing him as a decent and public-spirited individual deserving of understanding as he transitions into his new role.

In his reflection, Sunak highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting that inflation was “back to target,” mortgage rates were falling, and economic growth had returned.

He praised the Conservatives’ efforts in enhancing the UK’s global standing, rebuilding alliances, leading support for Ukraine, and fostering new transformative technologies.

The Conservative Party now faces the challenge of selecting a new leader and rebuilding its presence in the wake of this significant electoral defeat.
