There was mild tension on Tuesday in Abuja after supporters of embattled Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, were dispersed with tear gas at the gate of the National Assembly (NASS).

Naijaonpoint reports that the incident occurred shortly after the expiration of Senator Natasha’s six-month suspension from the Senate, raising hopes among her constituents that she would resume legislative duties without hindrance.

Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived at the complex with a large crowd of supporters, and many were denied access beyond certain points.

Security operatives fired tear gas to disperse the gathering, leaving several people injured.

According to Vanguard, eyewitnesses said women and youths who had travelled from Kogi State were among those affected, with some rushing to nearby hospitals. Emergency responders were also seen evacuating victims as tension rose at the main gate.

“It was supposed to be a historic return for her, but it turned into a nightmare,” a National Assembly staff member lamented.

Senator Natasha Condemns Action

Reacting to the development, Akpoti-Uduaghan condemned the treatment of her supporters, insisting that their peaceful presence should have been respected.

“These are innocent Nigerians who came in peace; they deserve better,” she told journalists.

Her comments came amid reports earlier in the week that her Senate office had been reopened, fuelling expectations that her suspension ordeal was over.

Civil society groups and political commentators have since waded in, urging the Senate leadership to investigate the clash and prevent a repeat of such confrontations.

Many described the incident as a dent in Nigeria’s democratic values, stressing that constituents have the right to show solidarity with their representatives without fear of intimidation or harm.
