A large crowd of supporters on Friday gathered at the VIP wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State, in anticipation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s arrival.
Fubara was expected to resume official duties on Thursday following the expiration of the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.
President Bola Tinubu had, on Wednesday, announced the lifting of the emergency rule declared in Rivers on March 18, 2025.
A day later, the Sole Administrator of the state, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), formally handed power back to Fubara, confirming that peace and order had been restored.
Despite this, the governor did not return to the Government House on Thursday, even as hundreds of supporters had gathered to welcome him.
Many who thronged the seat of power in the morning reportedly left disappointed after waiting for hours without seeing him.
A video obtained from Channels Television on Friday showed another crowd of loyalists massed at the airport in eager expectation of Fubara’s return.
