President Donald Trump has directed a halt to the United States green card lottery programme.
The decision was announced during a briefing on Friday by Kristi Noem, homeland security secretary.
Noem stated that the programme had allowed the suspect involved in the shootings at Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to enter the country.
The initiative, formally known as the Diversity Visa Immigrant Programme (DV1), provides up to 50,000 green cards annually through a lottery system.
The scheme is widely utilised in Africa and across numerous developing countries.
