WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Kaduna State Government has labeled the ongoing strike by the Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as an act of sabotage. The lecturers initiated the strike on Tuesday over unresolved demands with Governor Uba Sani’s administration. The government in a statement signed by the Commissioner of Education, Muhammad Sani-Bello, clarified that the issues raised by ASUU predate the current administration. He emphasized that Governor Sani has already taken steps to address them, along with other concerns affecting state-owned tertiary institutions. The statement accused ASUU of disrupting academic activities unnecessarily, stating that the union’s insistence on striking would undermine progress made in the education sector. Among ASUU’s grievances are unpaid salaries from May to September 2022 and Earned Academic Allowances dating back to 2015. While these liabilities originated before Governor Sani took office, the administration has agreed to settle them gradually due to financial constraints. Despite the governor’s commitment to meeting ASUU members upon his return from an official trip, the union proceeded with the strike. The government believes certain individuals within ASUU are attempting to reverse the progress achieved in the education sector over the past 20 months. Governor Sani however, has proposed an installment-based repayment plan to clear outstanding debts while maintaining financial stability in the state.
