WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seats of three State House of Assembly members and one House of Representatives member vacant following their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP characterized the defections, especially by elected legislators from its platform, as a serious betrayal of the public’s trust. The PDP, in a statement from the party’s Publicity Secretary, Maria Dogo, condemned the lawmakers’ shift to the APC as both unacceptable and unconstitutional, demanding their immediate resignation from their positions. Referencing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Constitution, which stipulate that legislators who switch parties must vacate their seats, the PDP urged the Speakers of both the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to declare the seats of the four defectors vacant and inform INEC to arrange for bye-elections. “While we respect every Nigerian’s constitutional right to freedom of association, we find these defections to be unacceptable,” the statement read. The party reassured the people of Kaduna State, particularly those in the affected constituencies, that it would utilize constitutional provisions to reclaim its mandates, emphasizing that there is no division within its national leadership. The PDP expressed confidence that it remains the preferred choice of the majority of Kaduna State’s residents, undeterred by the recent defections.
