The Kano State House of Assembly has held a public hearing on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, as part of efforts to promote transparency and deepen public participation in governance.
The hearing, which took place at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, Kano, brought together lawmakers, civil society organisations, development partners and various citizen groups.
Participants were given the opportunity to make inputs and submit recommendations ahead of the final passage of the budget.
Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore, underscored the critical role of the legislature in shaping the state’s development agenda through effective budget scrutiny.
According to him, the responsibility of examining and approving the budget cannot be overemphasised, as the appropriation bill remains the primary instrument through which government policies and programmes are translated into actions that directly impact the lives of citizens.
Falgore also commended the Kano State Governor for the timely submission of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, noting that it had given the Assembly enough time to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review.
The Speaker assured stakeholders that the proposed ₦1tn budget, in which education is expected to receive the largest allocation, would be subjected to rigorous scrutiny.
He said the review would ensure transparency, accountability and value for money, in line with the state’s development priorities.
Falgore further pledged that submissions and recommendations from civil society organisations, development partners and citizen representatives would be carefully considered during the review process.
Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Aminu Sa’adu, welcomed participants and described their turnout as a clear demonstration of inclusive governance.
He explained that the public hearing was designed to provide a platform for citizens to directly influence government spending priorities.
Sa’adu added that contributions made during the session would guide the Assembly in aligning budgetary allocations with the actual needs of the people, particularly at the grassroots level.
He assured participants that critical issues raised at the hearing would be reflected in the final budget to drive development across key sectors of the state.
The public hearing is expected to shape legislative deliberations as consideration of the 2026 Appropriation Bill continues, reinforcing Kano State’s commitment to participatory budgeting and accountable governance.
