The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has signed a landmark agreement to commence the offtake of 10 megawatts (MW) of solar energy from Haske Solar Company Limited, marking a major step towards strengthening its distribution network and enhancing clean energy supply.
The deal, signed in Abuja between the chief executive of KEDCO, Mr Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta; and the Executive Director of Portfolio Management at the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), Mr Tajuedeen Datti Ahmed, solidifies the procurement of clean energy from the Haske Solar Plant. The signing was witnessed by Mr Yusuf Usman Yahaya, Managing Director of Future Energies Africa (FEA).
According to a statement signed by Mr Sani Bala Sani, the Haske Solar Plant, commissioned in January 2023 within the Challawa Industrial Cluster, was developed through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the federal government under the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and managed by MOFI.
Speaking on the development, Mr Jimeta described the partnership as a significant milestone in KEDCO’s quest to deliver reliable and sustainable electricity.
“By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are not only improving network efficiency but also contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals,” he said.
According to him, purchasing 10MW from the Haske Solar Plant will boost energy security and promote industrial growth in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. “We have already begun energy offtake through our Abattoir Injection Substation, supplying industrial customers via NBC 11kV and Ceramic 11kV Feeders,” he added.
On his part, Mr Yahaya reaffirmed FEA’s commitment to renewable energy solutions.
“Through innovative partnerships, we aim to provide affordable, sustainable electricity and lead the way in renewable energy adoption and development in Northern Nigeria,” he stated.
KEDCO, which serves Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa, commended the federal government, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), MOFI, and the Kano State Government for implementing the grid-connected solar plant. The company reiterated its dedication to investing in renewable energy projects as part of a broader energy diversification strategy.
