THE governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.
The governor announced the decision today at a political gathering held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano.
Speaking to party leaders, lawmakers, and supporters, Yusuf said the move followed extensive consultations with elected officials and key stakeholders across the state.
According to him, 22 out of the 24 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine of the 14 federal lawmakers representing the state agreed to join the APC after wide consultations.
He explained that the decision was aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating development in Kano State.
“We are choosing partnership over polarisation. Political parties are merely vehicles; the ultimate goal is to deliver meaningful development to the people of Kano,” the governor said, urging residents to judge the decision by the administration’s performance.
The defection event was attended by prominent APC figures, including former National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.
Reacting to the development, the Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, described the defection as bold and historic, pledging the party’s loyalty to Governor Yusuf.
Senator Barau Jibrin also called on his supporters to rally behind the governor to ensure progress in the state.
Former APC National Chairman Ganduje welcomed Yusuf and the lawmakers into the party, describing the governor as a progressive leader and declaring him the leader of the APC in Kano State.
The mass defection of the governor and a majority of state and federal lawmakers is expected to significantly alter the political landscape in Kano State.
