THE Governor of Kano state, Abba Kabir Yusuf has promised to hold local government elections in the state soon.

According to a statement issued by his spokeswoman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

He stated that his principal made the commitment during a meeting with stakeholders and the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) at Africa House, Government House, Kano on Friday.

Governor Yusuf emphasised the administration’s preparedness to hold elections, which aligns with a recent Supreme Court decision affirming local governments’ financial autonomy.

He highlighted the administration’s commitment to the rule of law, fiscal responsibility, accountability, and transparency at all levels of government.

“Our administration has allowed the previous Local Government Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to finish their tenure despite pressure from within. This is out of respect we have for the rule of law,” Governor Yusuf said.

He added, “So, our respect for accountability and in consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment triggers our readiness to conduct council elections.”

The governor promised stakeholders that the local government elections will be free, fair, and credible, and urged opposition parties to participate without fear of government interference.

“We will not interfere with the electoral process,” he said.

“Preparations for the council elections are well underway, with the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) working hard to ensure the elections take place soon.

“I can assure you this would hold any time soon,” the governor added.

In preparation for the elections, he stated that the NNPP would soon nominate candidates to run for chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors in each of the 44 local government areas.

“We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” the Kano governor said.
