Kano State Government has announced plans to absorb more than 1,600 repentant thugs into its empowerment programme.
The state says the move is part of efforts to promote peace and help young people who have abandoned violent lifestyles find a better path.
Speaking at an event held to welcome youths who recently renounced violence, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, explained the government’s intention.
Comrade Waiya stressed that the administration would not abandon youths who have chosen to turn a new leaf.
“These youths have talents that can be beneficial to society if they are supported and guided to live meaningful lives,” he said.
He noted that the government believes many of the young men previously involved in thuggery have useful skills that can help the state if they are properly trained and monitored.
According to him, the initiative aims to channel their energy into productive ventures rather than insecurity and street violence.
Waiya disclosed that the state already has a structured programme known as the Safe Corridor, designed to rehabilitate and reintegrate repentant thugs.
He stated that “Already, 1,654 youths have been enrolled in the Safe Corridor programme, and another 2,100 will soon be screened to join”, adding that the plan is to present the beneficiaries to the governor once their rehabilitation is completed.
The Commissioner explained that the empowerment support will equip the participants with skills and tools to become self-reliant and contribute to the economic growth of Kano State.
He also highlighted that the ultimate aim is to ensure a safer environment and reduce youth involvement in social vices.
Waiya emphasised that the government is committed to sustaining peace and will keep supporting young people willing to abandon crime and embrace responsible living.
