The Kano State Police Command, on Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the violent confrontation at the Emir’s Palace in Kofar Kudu on Sunday, which nearly escalated into a bloody clash between rival loyalists of the two contending emirs.

Naijaonpoint reports that the spokesperson for the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the development in a WhatsApp message to Punch, noting that the suspects were currently in police custody.

“Yes, the command has arrested four suspects, and they are now in police custody as the investigation is still ongoing,” Haruna stated.

The arrest follows the directive of the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who earlier set up a panel to probe the altercation between supporters of the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the reinstated 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Although Haruna declined to provide detailed identities of the suspects, he reiterated that police operatives were working to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the unrest.

Naijaonpoint had reported that tensions boiled over on Sunday when Emir Bayero’s convoy was allegedly blocked by youths suspected to be loyal to Emir Sanusi while returning from a condolence visit to the family of the late business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata.

The confrontation took place near the Kofar-Kudu gate as the deposed emir attempted to pass through the route leading to the main palace on his way to the Nassarawa mini palace.

The emirship crisis in Kano has heightened tensions since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II in May 2024, following the deposition of Bayero and four other first-class emirs.

Both Sanusi and Bayero have since been operating from different palaces, deepening political divisions and sparking multiple clashes among their supporters.
