KANO: Police back down after strong objection from govt

The government accused security forces of attempting to disrupt the annual religious gathering.

The police had previously raised concerns after receiving intelligence reports about potential terrorist attacks on public gatherings in key locations throughout the state.

As a result, a team was dispatched to Sani Abacha Stadium, the venue for the National Tijjaniyya Maulud.

In response, the Kano State Government warned the police not to become a tool for individuals or groups aiming to undermine the state.

This morning, spokesperson for the Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, assured the public of their commitment to maintaining order and security during the event.

“Good morning, everyone! Security personnel are present to ensure that the ‘Maulud’ is conducted peacefully and concludes safely. Please stay vigilant against troublemakers. May Allah (SWT) deal with anyone planning to cause harm. We appreciate your prayers,” Kiyawa stated.

He also cautioned against individuals attempting to exploit the event by setting up commercial phone charging stations near the venue with the intention of stealing phones.

“Be alert and cautious, as some individuals are planning to set up phone charging stations near the Maulid venue to steal people’s phones,” he warned.

The government accused the security forces of trying to sabotage the event which has been held annually for 39 years.

The Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, also condemned the police’s actions, calling them unfair and unnecessary, given that there had been no reports of insecurity justifying such measures.

He urged the Federal Government to withdraw security personnel and allow the event to proceed without interference.
