WATCH THE VIDEO HERE RESIDENTS of Tudun Tagarji in Kano State were left in shock after discovering a newborn baby abandoned in a carton near a drainage in the Kaura area. The leader of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday. He revealed that his team came across the heartbreaking scene while on patrol around 2 a.m. “During our routine patrol, we noticed a carton discarded inside a pit near us. At first, we had no idea what was inside, but to be sure it wasn’t something dangerous, I instructed my team to check. To our shock, we found a lifeless baby inside,” Sulaiman said. The vigilante group immediately informed community leaders before reporting the case to the police. “By morning, we invited the ward head and other community members to witness the situation before taking the baby to the police station,” he added. The authorities later directed them to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the baby had died. After completing necessary procedures, the community organized a burial in line with Islamic rites. Sulaiman called on vigilante groups to remain alert in protecting their communities and called on parents to closely guide their children, particularly young women, to prevent cases of unwanted pregnancies. “Unwanted pregnancies go against Islamic teachings. Parents must be vigilant and properly guide their children,” he emphasized. Authorities have yet to identify those responsible for abandoning the baby.
