The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has withdrawn his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism offences.
Naijaonpoint reports that Kanu, who had previously applied for a witness summons, told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that after reviewing his case file, he was convinced there was no valid charge against him.
Kanu stated, “Join me in praising God. I have gone through my case file, and there is no charge against me,” he started.
“There is no extant law in this country upon which the prosecution can predicate the charges against me. If there’s any, let my Lord read it out to me.
“So, I should not enter any defence in a charge that does not exist under any law in Nigeria. I urge you to release me today or grant me bail.”
Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, asked Kanu to file a written address reflecting his position and to serve the prosecution accordingly.
The judge further advised the IPOB leader to seek legal guidance before finalising his decision.
“You should consult experts in criminal law on the consequences of the option you have chosen,” Justice Omotosho warned.
The matter, which had earlier been adjourned to October 27 for the defendant to open his defence, has now been shifted to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses.
Naijaonpoint understands that the court will, at the adjourned dates, consider Kanu’s stance that the evidence presented so far and the charges brought against him have failed to establish a case requiring his defence.
